Form, no function

Design is often influence by its form: form follows function. What if you can redesign aspects of existing product with alternative materials and don’t pay any attention to their function. This was the aim of this project. I ended up with three new shapes for peelers used in a kitchen environment. The material I used where bankirai (tropical wood), polyester and cookie dough. By realizing these three designs I tried to create a versatile ‘product range’. The polyester dome: clean, light but strong at the same time. The cookie dough: temporarily, fragile and open. The bankirai wood: symmetric, friendly and slim. Though the results were satisfying the process was at least as important. This was a very elaborate process of readjusting, experimentation and trying several production methods. Especially for the cookie dough it took a lot of effort to create a method where the cookie would remain its proportion during the rising of the product.
